Caffeine - A pharmacologically active substance found in coffee, cocoa beans, tea leaves, and cola nuts. It can act as a mild central nervous system stimulant if enough of it is consumed. For those with psoriasis, caffeine should be avoided as it could cause the condition to flare.
Calcipotriene - A synthetic topical form of vitamin D3 used to control the over production of skin cells in areas affected by mild-to-moderate psoriasis. It is commonly referred to as Dovonex.
Cancer - An uncontrolled proliferation of cells that invade and destroy healthy tissue. Some types of treatment for psoriasis can produce skin cancer in patients if their use is not monitored closely.
Carcinogen - Any cancer causing chemical, physical or biological agent or substance.
Cell - A cell is the basic structural unit of living organisms.
Chronic - A long term condition, such as psoriasis, that last for many years or has frequent recurrences.
Coal Tar - Coal tar is an affective dermatological topical agent for those with psoriasis. It can be applied by itself or in combination with other forms of treatment. The most common forms include ointment, topical cream, bath solutions, or shampoo. Coal tar is very safe in the treatment of psoriasis, as it lacks any major side effects. It is also antipruritic, antimitotic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory.
Cod Liver Oil - A valuable vitamin A and D rich oil produced in the liver of cod fish. Vitamin A and D are essential for healthy skin and bones.
Collagen - A fibrous protein produced by skin cells that gives the skin tensile strength and resilience.
Corticosteroid - Natural hormones produced by the cortex of the adrenal glands to control the immune system and body metabolism. Man-made corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids or cortisone) are often used for treating skin disorders and arthritis.
Crust - Formation of dry skin fluid over a break in the skin.
Cryosurgery - A surgical technique that involves the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze a group of cells for their removal.
Cure - Total recovery from disease.
Cutaneous - Having to do with the skin.
Cyclosporine - An immunosuppressive systemic drug that is used to treat a patient that receives an organ transplant. It reduces the bodys natural immunity to the new organ. Cyclosporine is also used to treat psoriasis by decreasing the bodys abnormal immune response.
Cyst - A fluid (liquid or semisolid material) filled structure that is sometimes found in any organ or tissue.
